I sent in a complaint about Pacific Landscape Management which is the company 2 doors down on 206th from the Community Center. They are opening up an investigation under CT# 09-104866. The Code Enforcement Officer handling this is Ed Soderman at ext 2676.

Earl meant to say "complaint" driven county. The squeaky wheel mentality. So get out there and squeak about this cement pumper site and be angry because this business did not gain the proper permits needed to establish here in Maltby. They didn't follow the rules.They are spilling toxins into our ground with the potential of contaminating our water. This should be of interest to everyone here in the community. So get involved and take a few minutes to write a complaint. Thanks- Kathy Wilson

Earl,

Just abourt anything would be better than Waste Management. Once they are established, they will surely expand to a transfer station and they have the county in their pocket. There are many clean businesses that would be better neighbors. I have talked with the law firm that defeated the motocross site and they are willing to represent us. They also gave me the name of the gentleman who organized that fight. I think we need to get organized and I need emails of interested parties. If people are not interested in getting organized and contributing to a legal fund, then they have made their bed. If interested, please contact me at wjj98296@aol.com

I was given an hotmail email address for the organizer for the motocross effort but he/she has never returned my emails so I don't know if the account is being checked.

One thing to consider is what is our next best alternative to Waste Management at that site? I think that we have lost the Urban Industrial zoning fight. (We can keep it from expanding). My question is, what "Urban Industrial" would be better at the Calvert site? From what I hear from longer term neighbors, WM would be much better neighbor than Calvert was.

It is going to be somebody? What kind of thing do we want?

Hello Again Neighbors,

Just a quick update to my previous comments. Scott said that the deadline for letter submittal does not apply to residents, just businesses around the site. So you can write a letter of disapproval anytime (they said the first review is in early August). Honestly, I think that we should have an attorney and I suggest the law firm that successfully defeated the motocross (motor cycle) track at the gravel pit site. They are environmental specialists. I have a phone call into Mr Bricklin and hope to hear back tomorrow. Does anyone know who led the fight against the motocross site? I am in need of some contacts. There are hundreds of involved people that could contribute to the cause.

I got this from a Maltby resident who has been communicating with Waste Management. Waste Management is working to setup a community meeting. The text below is copied from an email direct from a Waste Management employee:

I contacted a meeting facilitator yesterday and am waiting to hear what her schedule is for the next 2 months. I am working towards a meeting in August or September.

Also, I am with the engineers today, and they are preparing an artists rendering of the facility. We should have a new sign up in the next couple of weeks with a picture of some sort.

Hello Neighbors,

I’m afraid that this Waste Management development is just the tip of the iceburg. The situation is much worse. I attended a meeting at the Maltby Community Club in June about rural development but a majority of the people wanted to talk about the ugly and hazardous use of land in the Maltby area. Some people may not know that the Maltby area is an Urban Growth Area (the only UGA in Snohomish County that is not in a city) and it extends west to 86th Ave. There is no buffer between this area and our rural zoned neighborhoods. There are ugly, hazardous warehouses backing right up to half million dollar homes AND the County wants to expand this UGA. We are the only ones that can stop it and we must do it now. The only way to stop this ugly development is politically because the “light” industry allowed by code lets people like Waste Management move in with little fanfare and NO notice to the community. This change in land use threatens the community with noise pollution, air pollution, ground pollution, ground water pollution, traffic congestion, pest infestation, and large truck traffic on rural streets where families (including small children) walk, ride bicycles, and play. Such a development will destroy this quiet community and decimate property values where they have already been drastically reduced by this poor economy. Waste Management is right next to the railroad so I imagine they will dump their garbage on site and then load it onto rail cars to be hauled off to eastern WA. They claim this won't happen, but just wait. Once they are established all sorts of "garbage" will happen.

I urge you to write to the county planner responsible for this project scott.whitcutt@co.snohomish.wa.us and voice your opposition to project 08-106048. We already have ugly and hazardous heavy equipment operations, cement truck operations, mega warehouses, and gravel truck operations that slipped through the crack without much notice. This area could is a pristine rural area but instead is turning into a “garbage” dump (literally) of ugly industry. Your letters and emails are the ONLY thing that will change this because your voice also means your vote for the Snohomish County Council. If you don’t have much time, just send a quick email and tell them that you oppose the project. We only have until Wed (July 16) to send our input. See how they try to slip this stuff past us?!? I have written a letter requesting an extension to the deadline and hearings on this subject, but you know the government.

I heard similar back from Scott Whitcutt today. He indicated there were no plans for a transfer station, but I have since heard different from both your site and another individual that Waste Management has bigger plans...
